Guide to Moraira
A white village among pines and turquoise water, in the north of Alicante province.
Moraira is a coastal town in the municipality of Teulada, on Spain's Costa Blanca (Alicante). Elegant and laid-back, it has kept its Mediterranean charm — low-rise buildings, a marina, crystal-clear coves and a large international community. It's the place to enjoy the sea at your own pace, far from mass tourism.
The nearest airports are Alicante-Elche (about 80-90 min by car) and Valencia (about 90-100 min). Access is easy via the AP-7 motorway and the N-332. Moraira has no train station of its own, so a car or an airport transfer is the most convenient option.
L'Ampolla is the main town beach — sandy, with a seafront promenade. El Portet is a beautiful horseshoe-shaped cove with calm, turquoise water, perfect for swimming and for families. Around them you'll find smaller, rockier coves that are great for snorkelling.
Don't miss the Castle of Moraira, an 18th-century seafront fortress, and the walk up to the Cap d'Or watchtower, a medieval tower with spectacular coastal views. Stroll around the marina and the church of Santa Catalina, enjoy the weekly market, and try hiking, diving or paddle surfing.
By the harbour you'll find fresh fish and seafood, rice dishes and paella, and seasonal Mediterranean cuisine. This is also wine country: the Teulada-Moraira Muscat is a local tradition. For its size, Moraira has a surprisingly good dining scene.
From Moraira you're minutes from Calpe and its striking Peñón de Ifach rock, Jávea (Xàbia), the white houses of Altea, and the inland Pop Valley (Xaló) with its wineries and almond groves. Cala Moraig and the Cliffs Route in neighbouring Benitatxell offer some of the most dramatic views on the Costa Blanca.
Moraira enjoys a mild climate almost all year, with gentle winters and around 300 days of sunshine. Summer (July-August) is the high season. Our tip: May-June and September-October, when the sea is still warm and there are fewer people. Swimming is pleasant roughly from June to October.
